The drop — attributable in large part to slumping automobile sales — was greater than the 0.2% expected by economists and again raises concerns about how much of a slowdown the economy will have to endure in the second half of the year.  U.S. retail sales dropped 1.1% in May.  The New York Times Jul. 14, 2010

Large retailers, including Target Corp (TGT.N) to Costco Wholesale Corp (COST.O), will report their May figures in coming days.  Although volatility in the same-store numbers — April was up a tepid 0.5% — suggests we’re not out of the recession woods yet, analysts expect a strong start to the summer in June.  Reuters May 31, 2010

U.S. retail sales rose a better-than-expected 0.4 percent, following an upwardly-revised 2.1 percent surge in March.  Retail sales have now increased for seven straight months. Better still, “households are now taking part in the economy’s recovery, encouraged by an improving labor market.” The New York Times The Wall Street Journal May 14, 2010

U.S. retail sales rose 1.6% in March compared to the prior month with gains spread broadly across sectors.  Pent-up demand was cited as a factor, but one economist warned, “To maintain this momentum, we’ve got to see a pickup in job creation.”  The New York Times Apr. 14, 2010

In March, every major retailing category posted significant sales increases, handily beating the 6.3% increase expected by analysts in a Thomson Reuters poll.  True, an early Easter helped March (and may hurt April) and the comparisons were with a dismal 2009 number.  Still, observers point to other additional signs that consumers are coming out of their shells and even trading up for the first time in a long time.  In a bit of contrary, bad news, claims for jobless benefits rose last week.    The New York Times Apr. 8, 2010

The National Retail Federation is forecasting a 0.5% reduction in U.S. retail sales this year, the first year-over-year decline in fourteen years.  Bloomberg News National Retail Federation Jan. 27, 2009
