Looking to rebound from its unsuccessful foray into tablet computing with its 5-inch Streak, Dell Inc. is selling a 3G/4G-capable model of the 16GB Streak with two months of free service on T-Mobile on QVC at a price point of $319.  “The QVC deal, which is being made available online ahead of TV, beats Dell’s own price and is competitive with others found on the Web.  The offer includes free, standard shipping and the QVC’s “easy pay” plan of five monthly payments of $63.80 each plus tax.  The prices above reflect the product page on QVC’s website; the source article in TabTimes linked below mentions a price of $299.  In any event, as of this morning the product is not available through QVC.

In a press release today, Connecticut-based Zero Odor celebrated their successful partnership with number-one TV shopping network QVC, which has resulted in the sale of 50,000 units of Zero Odor’s four-bottle odor eliminator kit over the past year.  The product eliminates pet, smoke, kitchen and garbage odors from homes and automobiles without the use of heavy perfumes to temporarily mask them.

Zero Odor founder Jim Huffstetler also had the good sense to use the release as an opportunity to lavish a little praise on the professionals at QVC, saying (and this is just part of his encomium), “I am so impressed with QVC’s tireless efforts to delight their customers. The process for getting a product approved to go on-air is incredibly rigorous.”  Zero Odor Press Release  Nov. 11, 2011

Jennifer Coffey’s former hometown newspaper, The San Antonio Express-News, sketched an impressive picture this week of the new QVC host’s background in Texas — before she beat out thousands of other would-be presenters in auditions for the network.  Coffey owned and operated several successful clothing boutiques, which she aggressively promoted using social media, which in turn landed her some fashion-and-event gigs on a local cable TV station.

There is little doubt that the natural entrepreneur will make herself perfectly at home in the buttoned-up world of a large company.  Reached for comment today, she allowed only that she enjoyed her inaugural appearance on the network this week.  All other questions she referred to the retailer’s PR department.

Last night, Us Weekly cited an anonymous source in an exclusive story about a new fashion line by Nicole Richie that will premiere on QVC in February, coinciding with the premiere of Fashion StarMs. Richie already designs two fashion lines — House of Harlow and Winter Kate, and has agreed to appear as a celebrity mentor on Fashion Star, which is a new reality competition series that will be hosted by Elle Macpherson and will “…search for the next big brand in fashion.”

Ascena Retail Group, Inc., announced Monday that it has appointed John Sullivan executive vice president and chief operating Officer — a newly-created position for the company that operates the dressbarn, maurices and Justice brands.  Sullivan will head up Information Technology, Distribution, and HR Information Systems across all of the company’s brands, reporting to President and Chief Executive Officer David Jaffe.

Previously, Sullivan held senior positions for QVC and Liz Claiborne Inc.

An iPhone, although seemingly one not visiting the m.QVC.com site

“QVC’s mobile site, m.QVC.com, produced the fastest iPhone access time among large web retailers in September, says Compuware Gomez. Last month, m.QVC.com produced an average iPhone mobile response time of 1.75 seconds.”  Pinch yourself: Internet Retailer’s piece will even tell you which retailer came in second place!

This is good news for QVC for two reasons.  First it suggests that users to their mobile site have a good experience.  And second, it probably means that salesmen and women from the test’s sponsor, Compuware Gomez, which of course is in the business of improving web-based application performance, will spare QVC and hound the poor-performing mobile-platform marketers.  Pity those poor folks.

The Wall Street Journal’s Heard on the Street Blog ticked off a number of reasons why investors should take a close look at LINTA, thanks to the “chugging-right-along” performance of QVC.  After a blip in 2008 when revenue dropped 6%, the retailer has rounded right back into form and now posts annual revenue gains in the mid-single-digit percentages.  Sure, TV shopping is a mature industry and cable households are not expected grow in coming years.  But QVC can reasonably expect to retain its mostly older cable-viewing demo for years, and is making headway in newer sales channels at the same time.  (In 2Q, the company generated some 35% of U.S. sales online.)

The beauty of the stock buy is this, according to Heard on the Street: “QVC faces minimal marginal costs when sales rise, giving it unusually high margins. Liberty’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization are nearly 20% of sales.  That compares with margins well below 15% for most retailers and department stores.  And among online retailers, even supersuccessful Amazon.com‘s margins are less than 5%.”  Despite the expected flattening of U.S. cable households, there is plenty of room for growth in Japan and Europe.  Here is the hopeful conclusion: ”Investors looking for a bet on a decent shopping turnout this Christmas should be switched on to Liberty Interactive.”  The Wall Street Journal Heard on the Street Blog  Oct. 26, 2011  Paid subscription may be required.

Sylist.com interviewed Rachel Ashwell of Shabby Chic fame, who is making her premiere on QVC today, and came up with a few interesting tid-bits.  She never tires of white.  She would choose the late 1800s, if she could pick a historical era in which to live.  And she suggests bringing a flashlight, if you go flea-market shopping in winter.  (You only think you see the color in poor light.)

Ashwell also explains that her new QVC line (which premiered today) doesn’t compete with her Target line because they offer products in different categories.  “The Target line has bedding and bath and we’re not doing that for QVC, which has more casegoods and accessories.”  Stylist.com  Oct. 26, 2011
