Joy Mangano’s “divorced-Mom-to-riches” story didn’t begin with a mop, but years earlier with a fluorescent pet collar, which was one product idea that got away from her. This piece in Investors Business Daily offers a quick overview of Mangano’s meteoric rise; her company — Ingenious Designs — today brings HSN some $150 million in sales annually. One also comes away with the notion that Mangano doesn’t irritate interviewers or readers with false modesty. “I don’t know of anyone else who has withstood the test of time as myself, barring celebrities, that create and endorse products,” she said. The Joy of Being Joy Mangano, Who Will Release New Products on HSN in Coming Months
Joy Mangano, who transformed herself from a struggling divorcee into an retail superstar, has invented more than 100 products and is now celebrating her 10th anniversary on HSN. One of her tricks is keeping a pencil and notepad by her bed so that nightime inspiration doesn’t go to waste. Her career as inventor/pitchwoman began with the Miracle Mop on QVC and went on to include the hangers and other big sellers on HSN. That network’s executive vice president Bill Brand says that in order to succeed in the business, “you have to have a great product, a great story and a great storyteller. Joy nails all three. . . . She intuitively knows what women want and how they shop.” That talent has enabled Mangano to create a very nice life for herself and her family in a 14-bedroom home on Long Island’s north shore.
