A Somalian diplomat’s daughter, Iman hit the fashion scene in New York in 1975, never having worn make-up, but speaking five languages.  She achieved success, first, as a model, then with her own cosmetics company (offering foundations for women of color), and most recently as a celebrity fashion designer on HSN.  (Credit Mindy Grossman, again.)  It would be hard to imagine anyone more beautiful, cultured and urbane.  Iman will receive this year’s Fashion Icon award,  which is given by the Council of Fashion Designers of America to “an individual whose signature style has had a profound influence on fashion.”  The award will be bestowed at a Lincoln Center gala in New York City tonight.  Iman’s close friend actress Isabella Rossellini will present.  The New York Times Jun. 4, 2010
