Kim Nelson, displaying one of her Daisy Cakes

Baking entrepreneur Kim Nelson has landed an eight-minute slot on QVC in which to sell her Daisy Cakes red velvet cake and spicy sweet carrot cake Wednesday during an “In the Kitchen with David” program, featuring host David Venable.  The price of a cake: $49.86, including shipping and handling.  Ms. Nelson said that her South Carolina-based business has been “…headed in a direction that I’ve only dreamed of,” according to the news item linked below.  The catalyst for the sales surge isn’t hard to identify.  She appeared on the ABC TV program “Shark Tank” in April, and convinced real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran to invest in her company.  The Upstate Journal (SC)  Nov. 27, 2011

While promoting her new, QVC Wildlife Jewelry Line in Los Angeles yesterday, supermodel Heidi Klum told RadarOnline that she thinks the branding suits her because she leads a “wild” and “exciting” life.  She also revealed that the Eureka moment came while she was performing one of the most mundane chores in a jet setter’s life — reviewing entry requirements and customs forms prior to landing on an international flight:

I was on the plane and I was coming from overseas and I was thinking about names and I couldn’t come up with anything and I was reading the form when you come into the country, fruit, wildlife and it really popped out from that page. And then I thought it is also a double word, it is like having a wild life.

Ms. Klum makes a habit of designing her fashion pieces, which are priced from $43 to $200, on Saturday mornings, before joining her children for karate and ballet.  RadarOnline  Nov. 21, 2011

Singer/songwriter Mary J. Blige will perform on HSN at 12:30 am and 10 pm EST, next Wednesday, November 30,  in celebration of her upcoming album My Life II … The Journey Continues (Act 1).  This will be the first time Ms. Blige sings — as well as sells — on the TV shopping network.  But she will still sell and those efforts will support the debut of My Life Blossom, which is a follow-up to her initial foray into the fragrance business.  That first offering, called simply My Life, made a successful debut on HSN last year and was developed in cooperation with health and beauty marketer Carol’s Daughter.  My Life Blossom — billed as “a continuation of the My Life spirit in a softer, white floral accord with a warm vanilla heart” — will be sold in Fragrance Holiday Gift Sets as a part of HSN’s 24 Hour Beauty Gift Event.

HSN’s 24 Hour Beauty Event will feature beauty gifts from brands such as: Benefit, Phillip B, Wei East, Korres, Deborah Lippmann, Lancome and others.  HSN Press Release  Nov. 21, 2011

HSN, along with Condé Nast women’s publication SELF Magazine, and exercise equipment manufacturer ProForm, announced last Friday a new healthy lifestyle program called “60 Days to Healthier Ways.”

Ten winners among all of the contestants entering between now and December 9th will be selected to follow the “60 Days to Healthier Ways” program. As part of the program, winners will be given tools and guidance to help them succeed at improving their health, including: ProForm exercise equipment with iFit technology; a personalized fitness routine; a balanced diet plan; and a weekly “touch-base” training session with a SELF expert for the entire duration of the contest. Each participant’s progress will be tracked and evaluated and the transformations will be revealed during a special primetime ProForm fitness event LIVE on HSN in May 2012, when all HSN customers will be able to take part in the program themselves at home.  SELF Magazine will also feature the results in the June 2012 issue.
So, to recap: ten “lucky” winners will be obliged to undertake an exacting fitness regimen and then be judged by strangers on TV and in print.

Jim Huffstetler (courtesy of LinkedIn Profile)

Reached for comment this week after touting the sale of 50,000 units on QVC in a press release, Zero Odor founder Jim Huffstetler described his company’s business with the number one shopping network as a return to its direct response TV roots.  When Zero Odor (specializing in odor elimination without the use of heavy perfumes) got off the ground six years ago, two-minute, voiceover-and-testimonial infomercials were a critical sales channel.  At the time, they were placed on cable stations nationwide.  During 28 appearances on QVC in the past year, Huffstetler has marveled at the efficiency and professionalism of the TV-selling juggernaut.  He describes the QVC segment of Zero Odor’s business as “meaningful” and looks forward to continuing the association.

In addition to its TV-selling stints, Zero Odor distributes its products through retail chains, including Bed, Bath & Beyond and True Value hardware stores.
