“IndieShop and IndieShop.com will offer independently produced, handmade fashions and gifts directly from designers, with an emphasis on limited-run creations, including handbags, scarves, jewelry, home décor, pet accessories and other specialty goods.”  The TV network will debut in some 40 million homes and will apparently take a more lifestyle approach than the established shopping networks.  In a promotional statement that brings to mind the unfortunate example of HoneyShed, IndieShop intends to carve out a space where “shopping TV meets reality TV.”  Internet Retailer Jun. 4, 2010

There will be some heavy lifting in Eden Prairie through the remainder of the year.  To begin, while their larger competitors posted strong first quarters, featuring net sales gains, ShopNBC reported a net sales loss of 6.6% for the three months ending May 1, on $125 million in retail sales.  A main culprit — featuring prominently in the call — was the poor performance of the consumer electronics category, whose improvement is now the responsibility of Vice President Rod Ghormley.  (Ghormley joined ShopNBC in March.)  Adjusted EBITDA was a loss of ($4.3) million compared to an Adjusted EBITDA loss of ($6.8) million in the year-ago period, driven by improvements in gross margin.  Overall, the company posted an $11 million loss (compared to a $12 million loss in the prior-year period).

One of the heavy lifts for the company will come from NBC Universal’s plans to sell its roughly 6.5 million shares of VVTV stock, and ValueVision Media’s attendant decision not to renew its trademark licensing agreement with the company.  Accordingly, the brand name ShopNBC will be slowly retired during “customer-feedback-rich” phases, beginning online this summer.  The company expects the roll-out of one from a short list of new names under consideration to be completed by next February, well ahead of the trademark license’s expiration on May 1, 2011. The poverbial backyard fence — that’s what TV on-air testimonials are meant to stand in for.  And now, with the QVC UK website racking up 3.5 million monthly session, online ratings and reviews simply brings that helpful, neighborly advice into the digital space.  The reviews are moderated, of course, but the retailer cares a great deal about its customers’ actual opinions.  Products are marketed, re-tooled, and even discontinued altogether based on user feedback.  Promotional events like the QVC Beauty Awards have been created out of whole cloth, based on ratings and reviews. Sure, the reporter looks down her nose at TV shopping — but admits she’s a fan.  It’s one of the innocuous, low-brow pastimes that sophisticates don’t mind owing up to in the service of trying not to seem full of themselves.  Of course, she thinks QVC may bear some guilt for the spell it casts on true shopaholics.  In the end, this reporter (Megan McArdle) can’t quite determine whether the biggest DRTV network is a cause or effect of the nation”s profligacy.  No matter, the piece is a tribute to the merchandising skill of the staff — particularly the hosts.  And the source link contains a video link featuring a virtuouso performance of Patti Reilly selling perfume.  She riffs on its contributions to one’s striving to become the kind of “centered, grounded person” we all want to be.  Bravo!  The Atlantic Magazine May 11, 2010

Gems TV (USA) Ltd. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, a month after the company announced it was ceasing operations while its parent company looked to acquire an ownership stake in rival Jewelry Television.  In addition to the difficult economic environment, the company cited a steep rise in the price of gold, which it was unable to pass on to customers.  Seventeen of the company’s largest unsecured creditors are jewelry manufacturers.  National Jeweler Reuters Apr. 5, 2010

Source article recaps QVC’s 2009 performance in its home market and abroad. Among the details: QVC Japan lowered price points and sold less jewelry in the fourth quarter for a 17% increase in unit sales.  In European news, QVC will begin airing in Italy in the fourth quarter of this year.  www.DiamondNe.ws Mar. 3, 2010

Since the DRTV business didn’t benefit from the “Cash for Clunkers,” owing to not selling cars, shouldn’t we be gearing up for a slice of the “Cash for Caulkers” spending that may be in the offing very soon?

Anyone selling washing and drying machines and the like, and then delivering and installing them through third parties?  What about Home Depot- or Lowes-themed shows to sell replacement windows and HVAC systems?  It may take some doing to get this kind of programming launched, but if the government can re-allocate TARP funds to pay for dish washers, then the TV shopping networks can carve out a piece.  It seems to me that one of the most compelling and potentially profitable hours of DRTV programming would pitch home energy efficiency products — and then how to get government stimulus money to pay for them!

The linked article on CNNMoney.com (12/9/09) suggests that the government may pay for 50% of efficiency improvements up to a total cost of $12,000.  That’s a windfall for consumers and anyone selling to them.  So, who is in Washington DC now, while the legislation is being written, to see that the new stimulus spending gives the DRTV industry a chance? Well, if you’re going to sell out (figuratively), you may as well sell out (literally), too.  At any rate, that’s what Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs did on his first HSN show, selling plush robes and toiletries, last week.  The sellout — the second one — necessitated the cancellation of the second planned show.  RTTNews.com Dec. 7, 2009
