Profits Fall, but Subscribers Increase at DirecTV

February 10th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Carriage (Cable & Satellite TV)

DirecTV Group Inc., the largest U.S. satellite-television provider, reported a 4.6 percent drop in fourth-quarter profit after spending more to attract customers in a slowing economy.  That investment paid off in the form of an additional 301,000 U.S. TV subscribers the year-ago period.  That seems pretty good, given the times, or as one stock analyst put it, “DirecTV has, at least so far, been as little impacted by the recession as any company in America.”  Bloomberg Feb. 10, 2009

HSN to Use Web-to-TV Technology in Hawaii

October 8th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Carriage (Cable & Satellite TV), DRTV Retailer

HSN will take advantage of technology from ActiveVideo Networks that converts worldwide web video for viewing on a television set to give customers of Time Warner Cable’s Occeanic system in Hawaii greater control over their viewing experience.  The roll-out of this technology by Time Warner comes on the heels of a successful test during the summer Olympics, which allowed subscribers to view “…single-screen mosaic coverage of multiple channels of broadcast and cable Olympics programming as well as Olympics news, photo albums, schedules and other content acquired from Web RSS feeds.”  Presumably, that functionality will enable HSN to offer a “hybrid-type” shopping experience, incorporating the breadth of a website or catalog with the depth and excitement of a live, TV pitch.  Broadcasting & Cable  Oct. 8, 2008
