HSN’s new site will be available on all internet-enabled mobile devices and is touted as a key element of the retailer’s “comprehensive, multi-channel strategy designed to provide consumers with a compelling shopping experience whenever and wherever they desire.”  The new site is expected to feature much of the functionality currently available on HSN’s applications for the iPhone and Android devices — but without the download — and to narrow the gap between the shopping experiences on mobile devices versus PCs and Macs.  HSN Press Release Jun. 30, 2010

The NYC-based Conference Board research group reported that its U.S. Consumer Confidence Index dropped to 52.9 in June from 62.7 in May, reversing three months of gains.  It was the lowest level since March, when the index stood at 52.3.  Lynn Franco, director of the Conference Board Consumer Research Center, explained the drop in this statement.  “Increasing uncertainty and apprehension about the future state of the economy and labor market, no doubt a result of the recent slowdown in job growth, are the primary reasons for the sharp reversal in confidence.”  Bloomberg Businessweek reports that people are feeling even worse in Great Britain, where consumer confidence has reached a six-month low.  CNNMoney.com Conference Board Press Release Jun. 29, 2010

The Winkee is a triangular mock camisole that preserves a measure of modesty by discretely covering the cleavage of even the most plunging neckline without ruining the drape or line of the garment.  It was conceived by Patricia Calamari of Boca Raton, Fla., who didn’t want to wear an entire extra layer of clothing when all she was after was a little covering up.  It is also intended for women who want to present a more buttoned-up look for daytime, business hours, but turn on a dime and present a sexier, more glamorous look for evening.  Well, “The Ultimate Solution For Plunging Necklines” must have sold well during its first visit at QVC; it returns July 9th at noon ET.  Sun Sentinel (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)

Kansas-based Marche Design has created a hanging closet organizer that uses LED lighting, powered by four AA batteries, to illuminate closets for improved visibility.  And QVC believes it’s just the kind of “get-organized” product that will entice viewers and engage a variety of audiences.   “Equipped with a hook and loop fastener strap, the organizer attaches to any standard clothing rod and has six storage shelves that provide up to 10 lbs of support for each shelf.”  The product is scheduled to premiere during the 9 a.m. ET hour this morning.  I may get one so as to have to wait a few days before cleaning up the bedroom. Retailers with a mobile presence generate only 2.8% of their overall online, web-store traffic from their mobile phone browsers and only 2% of their online sales via the mobile devices, themselves.  Given these small numbers, perhaps it’s no surprise that of the 84 retailers asked, almost two-thirds of them said that they either had no mobile strategy or were in the early stages of coming up with one.  Still, they’re excited about the future potential.

These findings come from an annual state of online retailing study commissioned by the National Retail Federation’s digital arm Shop.org and conducted by Forrester Research, which surveyed a total of more than 100 retailers this spring.  Before pooh-poohing the distribution channel, it bears recalling that online sales, themselves, took a good decade or so to catch on.  One new retail wrinkle that may be more hype than anything else: social-media marketing.  “Only 7% of retailers cited a social networking presence as one of their top three most effective tools for gaining customers last year, compared with 90% of them citing marketing through search engines such as Google.com.”  The Wall Street Journal Jun. 29, 2010

Karen Rorrer Eggleston, whose painted goose eggs were sold on QVC last winter, recently gave a presentation at the Collinsville, Virginia, Library, in which she advised crafters in the audience on how to earn income from their artwork.  “She gave a few examples of enterprising women who have created popular products. One woman markets charms that hang from cell phones, “and they are selling like crazy,” Eggleston said. Another invented decorations to stick in the ventilation holes of Croc slip-on shoes.”  QVC selected her art as one of the top 20 most unique products in Virginia and purchased 250 of her goose eggs to sell on the network.  Martinsville (VA) Bulletin Jun. 29, 2010
